What I learned from Ms.NU

Yesterday, Ms.NU gave us task-based English lesson and we discussed it with her. I learned many things from them. I woukd like to write them.

I did a task with using English. I listened to teacher's and other students' speech about their favotite things, and wrote them dowm. I felt it was difficult to listen to them once. So I had to ask them to spesk again. Althogh I asked them it by using English, can Junior High School students do it ? I would like students get practical English skill and enjoy real communication with English. So teachers need to teach students not only grammtical English but also communication strategy, for example, in this case "pardon?", " one more please" and so on. I think it is important to teach communication strategy. It enables students to get pratical communication skill with English and I think students need to practice it routinely. If I will be an English teacher in the future , I try to do so.

Ms.NU said that output was very important to check whether students could understandand the class and get new English knowledge and skill. Also only input class tends to be one-way class, and students can't enjoy. So she tries to have students output what they learned in the class, for examlpe, by making easy English sentence. In addition, when students do output activity, teacher checks their answers each of them, students get delighted very much. I think they are very important things in teaching. I learned a lot of things from this class, thank you Ms.NU!

Lastly I learned many things about English teaching throught ETM and enjoy it. I was very glad to learn and think English teaching with everyone and Mr. JH. I like English more and get interested in English teaching more! Thank you everone and Mr.JH!

The Reflection of Micro Teaching

Shiki and I taught "CARSON, Rachel Louise" as a reading class. I would like to write the reflection of this class.

☆Strong Points

・We had students check new words at first.
⇒We wanted all students to join the class.

・We instructed students specifically as well as we could. For example, before the brainstorming, I said to students, "Please write your images more than Five and within Three minutes."
⇒We tried to have students concentrate this activity.

・We used brainstormig and showed the example.
⇒We wanted students to image and notice connection with human, foods, environment and so on through this activity.

☆Weak Pionts

・I think using photo is more helpful when students do brainstorming.
⇒Some students could not image well. We wanted to use phote, but we could not fine good phote and it is diffcult to get good teaching tool unexpectedly. And I think what tool we use for teaching is very important.

・We didn't use English and have students, either.
⇒Mr.JH advised me to have students use English in brainstorming. I think it is important to think something with English to get English skill.

Micro teaching was good experience for me. Thank you for your cooperation and please comment on our Micro teaching!

How to be a successful English Teacher at Junior High School

Last week, Mr. M came to our class and talked about Junior High School and how to teach English.I knew and thought many things. So I would like to write them based on Mr.M' talk and my experience.

1.Teacher should teach along with development of students' ability. It is important to give technical English knowledge and explanation to students. But sometimes they confuse students. M0re important thins are that students can get interested in English, and unedrstand and use English they learn. For them it is not always effective to give technical knowledge and explanation.Theacher should arrange and contrive the contents they teach students and way of teaching.
My English teacher at Junior High School taught us English with her original handout. She used easy words, some diagrams. Sometimes she used real persons and characters we were interested in. Her handout helped us to get inretested in Englih and unederstand English well.

2.I would like students to enjoy learning and thinking, but it is not easy. Because there are various students in the school. For example, they are active or passive, like teachers or not, like studying or not. Moreover some students at junior High School are defiant of adults. So I think it is important for teacher to consider each student's character and attitude in order to give them good learning and form good relationship with them.

Mr.M advised us to experience various things. It gives good influences to our life and helps us in various aspects when we bacome teacher. This idea was impressive for me.
Thank you for reading☆

Methods of Teaching Vocabulary

Last week we learned about two approaches for teaching vocabulary: the Teach and Learn Approach and the Learning through Input Approach. You can see a PowerPoint presentation of the approaches here. I would like to tell you about the strengths and weaknesses of each approach as well as the approach I would use as a Junior High School English teacher.

1. Present and Learn
■Strengths
・All students learn new words easily and exactly because they are given their meaning in their own language soon.

・Teacher spends much time to show students examples of using of new words and have students do activity to remember them.

■Weaknesses
・Students tend to be passive because they don't need to think so much.

・New words tend to be scrappy and students forget them earlier.

2.Teaching through Input Approach
■Strengths
・In this method teacher chooses Natural Vocabulary Groups centered around a theme, so new words students learn have connection of meaning. It helps students to remember new words more effectively. And students will be able to communicate with others about a theme they learned. So students can get practical communication skill.

・Teacher can use target language more than Present and Learn.

■Weaknesses
・Students' level and knowledge are different. So teacher tries to have every student get interested in the message and attend to it. Teacher has to think how he/she helps students who can't attend to it.

Lastly as a Junior High School English teacher I would favor the Learning through Input Approach. Because I would like to have students think by themselves as well as they can and remember words effectively.

My idea about Communicative Activities

Today,I am goinng to review two of the "typical Japanese junior high school"communicative activities presented in ETM3.The activities I am going to review are Interview and Questionnaire. You can view them here. http://www.englisheducation.iwate-u.ac.jp/Hall/kyouikuhou/TypicalCommunicativeActivities.files/frame.htm
First is Interview. The example presented was started the question "What were you doing at 7 last night?" immediatelly.I think it is not real interview. So,to be more natural conversation and effective practice,I would like to add some sentences. For example,"Excuse me.May I ask you?","Hi!Do you have time?" and so on.I think beginning of conversation is surprisingly difficult. To have students get used to conversation in English, it is necessary for them to practice these expression in addition to gramatical practice.Next is Questionnaire. When we communicate with others, it is important to get interested in them and ask questions to understand them.I would like to give more information to have enough practice and enjoy communication. For example, teacher gives some cards 「food」「sport」,「flower」and so on.Also, teacher gives specific information for these cards.「food」―apple, cheese,「sport」―baseball, soccer,「flower」―cherry blossom, rose and so on.I think these information helps students to communicate smoothly.

Important thing for me

Important thing for me is the time I don't think anything. Do you have such the time? I think having such the time is important because poeple always need thinking something a day. For example, I think the following things. In the morning, "what time is it now?","I have to hurry up to get to school!" In the classes, of course, I think many things about each subjects through listening to lecture and other students' opinions, and reading text book. After school, "What do I have to do? Are there any pieces of homework? Do I have to go to part time job?" From morning to night, I always think something. So I sometimes get tired of thinking. At which time, I try not to think anything by listening to music, watching out of the window, reading comics and so on. Ultimately I fall asleep. After I have the time, I get power again. It's a change a pace! It's important thing for me!

My English experience

When I entered JHS, I sterted studying English. I have liked English since then. Some people don't like grammatical class but I like. I think it is important to understand English and it is helpful to communicate with others in English. Also, I was glad I got new Engkish knowledge because I felt my world expanded. When my English teacher taught grammar, she used many topics we was interested in.For example, TV dramas, comics and so on. It helped me to enjoy and understand Eglish. In addition, my teacher wrote some coments every test. I was glad to read them and it encouraged me to study English.
In high school, every teacher advanced class very fast and I had to do a lot of homework. So I was very sleepy every day and I couldn't concentrate classes. I think it was least valuable way. But there was most enjoyable and valuable activity, too. In my English class, we wrote "Eglish class diary". We wrote some points we studied in the class and whatever we wanted to write. And we exchanged our notebook each other every time. It's like a "KOUKAN NIKKI!". I looked foward to coming my turn because I wanted to read coments my classmates and teacher wrote. Every student concentrated Enlish class on own turn, and we understood and remembered points through writing and reading each other.
I think it is important to communicate with using English, of course. But it is important to communicate thruogh studying English, too. If I become an English teacher, I will treasure this idea.
